I have experienced "Sun Time Fun" which is a work made of 3 still images, each of a different time of day: Dawn, dusk and night. The images are made of simple shapes where some of them are consistent, such as the clouds. There are 3 buttons in the top of the screen that controls which picture to show. The work shows the idea of how time can pass by quickly when someone is having fun - I think most people can relate to that.
I can see in your code, that you have made actual 'buttons' from a preset function - Nice to know this is an option ;) You define your own functions and use them in a smart way. It's a shame that your first attempt with the variables didn't go as you planned, but hey, that's what happens in coding. You encouraged to beat the problem although you were sick during the process - Well done!
If I had to suggest some changes to the program, first of all it could for you to make a 4th time that illustrates noon as the program then would cover more of the day. Other than that I don't have other suggestions as I think it works very well for the assignment.
