I sent four tables with the RAVE stars in M67, Hyades, Pleiades, and IC4651 to Keith. Here are the plots showing the location of these stars in an HR-diagram (using RAVE DR4 parameters), as well as their radial velocities. The points with red circles designate the stars which are considered cluster members.

Thanks @amkunder! Keith said he would make plots based on those stars, but he is currently moving so I might ask you for the tables in case he runs out of time.
So far the bigger problem with the main-sequence has been constructing the 'right' model, rather than the 'right' training set. If we don't use these open cluster stars as part of the training set, then we should definitely include figures comparing our labels to those isochrones & metallicities/radial velocities.
@amkunder @keithhawkins would either of you be able to send those RAVE_OBS_ID
entries to me for each cluster? (or post them here)

I believe that's already done. I sent through via email a fits table of them and slightly modified the clusters python script to do the same figures as the GCs for the OCs. I can resend it.

Showing a candidate selection based on metallicity/radial velocity is less important to me -- just using @amkunder's OC candidates and your (conservatively-chosen) GC members. Then it would be great to see a Nx2 (column x row) figure showing Teff/logg for each cluster. Left hand panels are unRAVE values, right hand panels can be DR4 values. But be aware we may drop the right hand panel comparisons in the final figure, because the point is not really to compare to DR4 but just to see if our values make sense w.r.t isochrones for each cluster. If possible, follow similar style guide laid out in other figures (e.g., square panel axes, MaxNLocator
, etc). There is also a matplotlibrc
file that will take care of a lot of the styling. Feel free to commit the isochrones you used to the repository, as they are small and essential for reproducible plotting.
Will do that today. The move to NYC has slight disorganized me so I haven’t had the chance to upload those figures. They should be there by end of the day (US time).

H-R diagrams of each OC and GC exist. Maybe a better GC selection should be done. The average cluster metallicities are 0.3-0.4 dex to high for each GC (i.e. the stars are offset from the black isochrone which was assumed to have the cluster metallicity and an age = 10Gyr for the GCs).Additionally, the dispersions on the order of 0.29-0.40 dex (omega cen has the largest dispersion as expected). Maybe GC candidate re-selection will be needed to reduce the star-to-star dispersion within the cluster.
The OCs perform better with offsets as large a 0.10 dex and dispersion ~0.10 dex. I need to quickly grab age estimates for the OCs to put isochrones on top.

This is from the RAVE DR5 paper -- a table with cluster parameters, including ages from Kharchenko et al 2013. This is from a sample of ~70 RAVE stars in various clusters that have also been studied externally from high-resolution spectroscopy, so they have high-res spectroscopic logg , Teff and Fe/H. The advantage of overlap RAVE+external studies is that a quantitative comparison of the RAVE stellar parameters can be made pretty easily. But there are not as many stars if you limit the sample to only those stars with external studies. I'm happy to send you this sample as well, if you think it would be useful?
Regarding GCs, let me see what I have.

It's getting late now to keep messing with training sets, so I am re-scoping (and re-naming) this issue to have validation figures of cluster HRDs that include these members, so we can just validate that we have done things OK. If we had focussed on the main-sequence from an earlier date, including these stars in the training set would have been the right thing to do!
Or include a figure comparing the test labels we get.
