Android Auto track-skip button behaves like fast-forward #2551

Closed johnp789 closed 5 years ago

johnp789 commented 6 years ago

App version: 1.6.4.5 (beta from Google Play)

Android version: 7.0, December 1, 2017 patch level

Device model: LG G5 (LGLS992)

Expected behaviour: Tapping the track-skip (right arrow + vertical bar) button in Android Auto should cause AntennaPod to skip to the next item in the queue

Current behaviour: Tapping the track-skip (right arrow + vertical bar) button in Android Auto causes AntennaPod to jump ahead a few seconds. I cannot tell how far it jumps ahead, but it seems to be a similar jump to what the app does upon tapping the fast-forward (right arrow + right arrow) button.

First occured: First noticed this behavior when the Android Auto button layout was changed to have a track-skip and a fast-forward button.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Connect to Android Auto
  2. Tap the Music (headphones) button
  3. Tap AntennaPod
  4. Begin (or resume) playback of an episode. As long as #2492 is not preventing the track-skip and other controls to be displayed, tap the track-skip button. Instead of skipping to the next episode in the queue, AntennaPod jumps ahead a few seconds in the currently playing episode.

Environment: Connected via USB to Android Auto on a 2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E

We changed the behavior because a lot of people asked for it. You can change this in the settings via "Forward Button Skips"

nelsonblaha commented 6 years ago

Huh, I was one of the people who wanted it to skip forward instead of going to next track, and mine still goes to next track (Not android auto, but the controls on my bluetooth headphones). My "forward button skips" switch is disabled. Even tried enabling and disabling it.

I appreciate the tip for "Forward Button Skips." Its description mentions hardware buttons, so that didn't sound right for buttons displayed on Android Auto.

I have the same problem. Same issue on lockscree. I can't try Bluetooth until the afternoon but changing Use the built in Sonic media player to off seems to fix the lockscree issue

I have looked at this thread a couple times and I think I finally understand what that issue is.

On the lock screen, the FF and RW icons now look like track-forward and track-reverse buttons. But if you hit them (turn off "Forward Button Skips" in settings), then these buttons don't truly represent the action that will take place when you hit them.

Previously (before this latest update) the buttons looked like "<<" and ">>" so it was more intuitive. Now that they look like "|<" and ">|" I was hesitant to press them, thinking I would skip my podcast. But upon testing it, I found out that the buttons still RW or FF still function as I want them to (30 second jumps).

In short, the functionality is working exactly as I desire. But the icons are a bit misleading.

No, in my case what happens is as soon as the Bluetooth connection hooks up it stops fast forwarding and skips to the next episode. Similarly, the podcast USUALLY auto plays when the bluetooth connects, even when the option is disabled.

Unfortunately this bug means I'll delete the app as it becomes unusable in the car. Its a pity the doesn't seem to be interest in fixing it.

@Mingybear Have you tried the beta version 1.6.6 from Google Play? I think we fixed this

Mingybear commented 6 years ago

I downloaded the beta. It seems to work correctly under Android auto but I will have to check it with Bluetooth this afternoon. It shows the >| instead of >> but works as fast forward. I will update later today.

Thanks

Updating the software allows for the proper function of the fast forward during Bluetooth, making it usable in the car.

When using Android Auto, unlike other players (beyonpod, pulsar) the control buttons << , >> etc do not appear on the phone display although the car controls continue to work.

Also, Antennapod doesn’t stop playing when, for example, Google Maps makes an announcement even if the software is set up for this.

However, upgrading makes the software usable in the car, despite these issues.

I think this is the same/similar issue with the Android Auto app. The fast forward button is displayed as a skip button.

Additionally there is a second fast forward button in the Antennapod view's expanded controls

Also I think it looks strange to use the grey-outline buttons at all in Android Auto, especially as the skip button doesn't match.

ByteHamster commented 5 years ago

This issue seems to be fixed (AntennaPod's behavior was changed on purpose. We added an option to revert to the old behavior).

@dugite-code The two buttons do something different. One skips a few second and the other one skips the whole episode. The outline around notification buttons is tracked in #2088.

dugite-code commented 5 years ago

@ByteHamster this is only true if you have the Forward Button Skips option checked, otherwise all the buttons fast forward, hence my confusion. As this is a separate issue I've opened a feature request
