Font Properties #32

Open KenFrantz opened 5 years ago

KenFrantz commented 5 years ago

I would like to propose two properties be added to the font specifications in the theme creator.

Sometimes, depending on the font, its size, weight, and style, the text can be hard to distinguish on the screen. Two properties can assist with making text more readable on-screen. (1) allow all capital characters, and (2) allow for kerning of the text.

In some situations, sans-serif fonts are easier to read in all caps. Likewise, sometimes adding a little more space than normal between characters of a proportional spaced font can make the text easier to read. The font dialog in MS Word has both of these feature that I have used successfully in making my own jpegs for displaying images at the Hall.

@KenFrantz thanks for your suggestions. Just to clarify, I believe on item 2 you are referring to tracking rather than kerning (kerning is already applied).

I thought kerning refers to space between characters. If not, my mistake. Sorry.

@KenFrantz no apology needed! In MS Word there are settings for both tracking and kerning. In Font => Advanced, under Character Spacing you have a "Spacing" option which allows you to increase or decrease the horizontal spacing by a fixed amount between all adjacent characters. This is called the "tracking" (and based on your description it's what I think you're looking for). There is also a checkbox in the same MS Word dialog entitled "Kerning". This is enabled in OnlyV. It is a subtle variation in the horizontal spacing between specific pairs of characters.

KenFrantz commented 5 years ago

That's very interesting. I must confess I never noticed that subtle difference. I usually have kerning on in my documents, but never noticed any difference between on and off. When I looked it up and saw that it refers to character spacing, I assumed it worked in conjunction with what you are calling tracking and I could easily see the effect of changing the tracking.

Well, it's a poor day when you don't learn something. This is a good day. Thanks.

I did notice one other thing as I was prepping some slides for a talk: When you have multiple verses displayed together, you use a hyphen or a comma, as in 24:1-3 and 24:1,2.

I notice that our publications add a space following a comma, as in 24:1, 2. That can also improve readability, especially when you have verses like 24:11,12 or 24:11, 12. I use an image editor to add space manually.

Anyway, I know you have a lot on your plate, so I don't want to burden you with nits. The tracking thing, though, I believe would be a big help.

Thanks for your good work and for listening, Ken C: (518) 947-4709 kenfrantz@outlook.commailto:kenfrantz@outlook.com

@KenFrantz option to add a space between verse numbers is present in OnlyV options (not OnlyV Theme Creator) and it's called "Space between title verse numbers".

AntonyCorbett commented 5 years ago

To summarize - this feature request calls for settings to adjust the tracking of type.
