Shimmer fails to download update #54

When I tested out Shimmer prior to releasing version 0.4, it asked if I wanted 
to update just fine. 
But after it presented the download progress bar, nothing happened. Re-reading 
the Shimmer 
docs, it seems I need to just let the whole thing run in its own thread instead 
of just the check.

Still doesn't work in the 0.5 release, even after changing the code to look 
like the Shimmer example.
