I have used the following GPIO expander in my current PCB design: PCF8575 I have chosen a breakout board for this chip that seems widely available and cost-effective, while at the same time making it easier to manufacture for a hobbyist than using the smd chip directly. I attach a picture of the chosen breakout board imagen

be mindful of defective ICs from certain suppliers

will possibly include PCF8575 footprint beneath as an alternative option
