This has been an idea I've had for a while much like swords you find a progressive nail upgrade. Now some problems with this that has been brought to my attention is the fact certain pogos which can be in logic are impossible with higher nail upgrades. This would also make buying your nail upgrade normally be a check and also have it maybe be able to be cost sanity if not already.
A solution that has been thought of in #hollow-knight is having to claim the upgrade in the menu.
