This comes from https://github.com/ArctosDB/arctos/issues/729
I don't think I can predictably discriminate between fixing things and pushing the wrong button. What you're proposing would have prevented fixing these data, however the problem came about.
This is easy to reverse. All localities (and events) contain an archive link, and the archive link contains all changes. A link to the archive(s) is also included in the change notification email.
@fsjmm1
How hard would it be to make "No specific locality" act like a curator verified locality? I guess I feel that if someone puts in "No specific locality" there shouldn't be an edit to that locality. Some "No specific locality" localities DO have elevation or depth or some kind of remark and some are variants of "No specific locality".
It seems like those should never be changed after they are entered. Any new information should require a new specimen event and locality.
Thoughts?
1) We're inconsistent, despite http://handbook.arctosdb.org/documentation/locality.html#specific-locality
In these examples, as well as in records for which appropriate data are missing, the correct value for Specific Locality is, “No specific locality recorded.”
Data (and some false positives) below.
2) "No specific locality recorded." is not necessarily synonymous with "we don't have data." I collected a ton of stuff while strapped to a certified WAAS GPS. I knew where I was within 3 meters in 3 dimensions. I submitted it all as "No specific locality recorded." because I just couldn't see the point of trying to represent those data as descriptive strings ("87 miles north King Salmon"...).
3) When "No specific locality recorded." IS synonymous with "we don't have data," I'd not want to make it difficult (or impossible!) to update when those data appear. There's a ton of Rausch stuff scattered across collections and now attached to field notes, for example. When someone figures out that a squirrel, it's parasites, the snake from whose stomach it was removed, and some snake parasites are from THERE it should be possible (maybe even easy!) to update one locality (which triggers the notifications, which I think fairly often trigger someone finding even more data).

In these examples, as well as in records for which appropriate data are missing, the correct value for Specific Locality is, “No specific locality recorded.”
Data (and some false positives) below.
1.
"No specific locality recorded." is not necessarily synonymous with "we don't have data." I collected a ton of stuff while strapped to a certified WAAS GPS. I knew where I was within 3 meters in 3 dimensions. I submitted it all as "No specific locality recorded." because I just couldn't see the point of trying to represent those data as descriptive strings ("87 miles north King Salmon"...). 2.
When "No specific locality recorded." IS synonymous with "we don't have data," I'd not want to make it difficult (or impossible!) to update when those data appear.

I'm also confused by the notification page when a locality is changed. Can we change the notification to explicitly say what exactly was changed and from what? When I look at the notification below, it looks like an elevation was added, but when I go to the locality, there is no elevation. Steffi, this was the original problem that started this - Robert Gabbitas added elevation to a "no specific locality recorded" locality that modified records across many collections. But again, I can't undertand what happened here.
Red stuff changed.
UserID is the agent who changed FROM the data in the row; each change is an archive of :OLD values captured with Oracle triggers. That is, whodunit discarded the row on which their username appears, creating the next-newer row.
RWGABBITAS moved it from https://arctos.database.museum/geography.cfm?geog_auth_rec_id=69 to https://arctos.database.museum/geography.cfm?geog_auth_rec_id=1089 and added elevation.
I moved it back, then removed elevation (after James pointed out that I'd missed that).
MGOLIVER moved it to https://arctos.database.museum/geography.cfm?geog_auth_rec_id=121, then added elevation, then probably noticed the big red "72237 specimens..." box and un-did all that.
@StefanieBond if you go to http://handbook.arctosdb.org/ and search "Locality" you'll find a bunch of how-tos. Very short version is that shared localities should be changed if that looks reasonable for all of the specimens (if 500 specimens in 10 collections are from "fairbanks" which maps to Russia because someone oopsied the longitude, you should just edit and change them all), in a case like this (you know more for a few specimens, not all) the affected specimens should be moved to different locality - either a new one, or one used by similar specimens.
So for display purposes, it would be good to have a "changed from" and "changed to" column, especially in situations like this where so many different and not-so-transparent changes were taking place.

Issue Documentation is http://handbook.arctosdb.org/how_to/How-to-Use-Issues-in-Arctos.html Prevent users editing "No specific locality recorded" to add collection specific data that do not apply to specimens in other collections
Describe the bug A clear and concise description of what the bug is. For example: Sept 11, 2018 Looks like Robert Gabbitas changed the "No specific locality recorded" locality to include an elevation, across collections.
To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:
Expected behavior A clear and concise description of what you expected to happen. How do we prevent this, or make it easier to reverse
