Can ALMNH: Museum Expedition and ALMNH: Museum Staff Trip be merged into ALMNH: Alabama Museum of Natural History?

Jegelewicz commented 3 years ago

@mbprondzinski

mbprondzinski commented 3 years ago

I don't think that would be a good idea. Expeditions are yearly paid field trips for the public. Museum staff trips are research collecting trips.

Jegelewicz commented 1 year ago

I am reopening this because these two thing SHOULD be projects. I will create one to show you how it would look, then I will ping the collections so that we can discuss the issues, if any.

Jegelewicz commented 1 year ago

@babogan and/or @aklompma do you have any information available about the Museum Expeditions or Staff Trips? If I could get details for one, I can set up a project and we can migrate these things into that.

babogan commented 1 year ago

I have the files with the info on these expeditions and trips in my office for those that were well documented! Which would you want to work with to get started?

Jegelewicz commented 1 year ago

Do you have info on Expedition 10?

babogan commented 1 year ago

@aklompma I found PV989.0003- Bone fragments labelled as coming from "expedition 10" but cannot find the source file... do you have any leads on where the actual source file may be? Teresa, I can give you some prelim. info from this (Tombigbee Sand (Eutaw Fm.).. date isn't marked on this specimens' file unfortunately. I'm thinking the expeditions file got separated at some point

Here is a photo with some info on this expedition. I have no source file for PV1989.0003.

babogan commented 1 year ago

Thank you, this is perfect! I’ll look through my files again and make sure. I should at least have something. I have the source for the 1989.0003 specimen, sorry I should have been more clear. That’s the only one I seem to have the source for but I will look more closely

@babogan @aklompma I can start with the document attached above! I'll try to get to this before the end of the week.

Jegelewicz commented 1 year ago

Sweet - apparently this was done at least once! see https://arctos.database.museum/project/10003247

Jegelewicz commented 1 year ago

Here is the start of expedition 10. - https://arctos.database.museum/project/10004106

Jegelewicz commented 1 year ago

It looks like the following accessions relate to this project:

PV1988.0006 PV1988.0007 PV1988.0008 PV1988.0009 PV1988.0013 PV1988.0020 PV1989.0002 PV1989.0003

Some outliers:

These records are in one of those accessions, but do not carry the Expedition 10 identifier

https://arctos.database.museum/guid/ALMNH:Paleo:1025 https://arctos.database.museum/guid/ALMNH:Paleo:1261 https://arctos.database.museum/guid/ALMNH:Paleo:1860 https://arctos.database.museum/guid/ALMNH:Paleo:1931 https://arctos.database.museum/guid/ALMNH:Paleo:1964

These records carry the Expedition 10 identifier, but are NOT in one of the accessions listed above.

https://arctos.database.museum/guid/ALMNH:Paleo:997 (accn VP1987.0003, curious how something could be accessioned before the expedition ever took place!)

Any thoughts on the above?

babogan commented 1 year ago

Hmmm... 1987.003 on my end is marked as Expedition 10 as well... The other 1987 specimens are not linked to expeditions in their files. @aklompma do you think this was erroneously linked to expedition 10? The others you sent as outliers are expedition 10 on my end!

Jegelewicz commented 1 year ago

Great! So the only one that needs resolution is 1987.0003. All of the other things have been added to the project. May I remove the Expedition 10 identifiers from the records? I'll leave a remark on the one above.

So this will go away

because now the records have this

babogan commented 1 year ago

I’ll leave this one up to Adiel! Thanks so much Teresa, this looks great!!

Thanks! The idea would be to create a project for each expedition and eventually do away with the ALMNH: Museum Expedition identifiers.

aklompma commented 1 year ago

I think is makes sense to remove Museum Expedition 10 (1988) from this PV1987.0003 record.

Jegelewicz commented 1 year ago

@aklompma I want to remove the identifier from ALL of the records as they now are associated with the Expedition 10 Project.

Jegelewicz commented 1 year ago
Adiel and Brook,

I started working on Museum Expedition 11 today and I have a few questions.

1. It looks like some of the records that belong in accession PV1989.0004 have been placed in a separate accession PV1989.004. Can I move these two records to PV1989.0004 and remove the duplicate accession or are these really two separate accessions?

2. It appears that the records in accession PV1989.0004 are all of the specimens that came from ALMNH: Museum Expedition 11, except these, which have the ALMNH: Museum Staff Trip 1989 identifier.
ALMNH:Paleo:2255 ALMNH:Paleo:2256 ALMNH:Paleo:2257 ALMNH:Paleo:2258 ALMNH:Paleo:2259 ALMNH:Paleo:2260 ALMNH:Paleo:2261 ALMNH:Paleo:2262 Did these really come from some different expedition or are they also part of ALMNH: Museum Expedition 11? Depending on your answer, I may suggest moving these to their own accession so that we can associate accessions with projects.

3. ALMNH:Paleo:2305 has the ALMNH: Museum Expedition 11 identifier, but it is in accession PV1990.0007. The collection date suggests that perhaps it should be in accession PV1989.0004, but I cannot be certain. Is the Expedition 11 identifier in error or should it be in accession PV1989.0004?

4. Do you have the flyer for this expedition like the one you gave me for expedition 10? See https://github.com/ArctosDB/arctos/issues/3539#issuecomment-1527938289 so that I can fill out the Arctos Project.

I'm doing this because we are trying to clean up identifiers. Please let me know if I can be helping you with anything else!

Adios,

Teresa J. Mayfield-Meyer
Jegelewicz commented 1 year ago

ALMNH: Museum Expedition 10 identifiers removed as records have been added to project and outliers are marked as such in collection object remarks.

Jegelewicz commented 1 year ago

These need too much research for me to handle right now - see https://arctos.database.museum/project/10004187

Because we need to move forward, I suggest these get changed as follows:

current ID type New type new issued by new id value
ALMNH:Museum Staff trip identifier Alabama Museum of Natural History CONCATENATE Museum Staff trip and current value
ALMNH: Museum Expedition identifier Alabama Museum of Natural History CONCATENATE Museum Expedition and current value

@babogan @aklompma will this work for you?

Jegelewicz commented 12 months ago

These have been updated and can be found using the issued by as listed below:

current ID type New type new issued by
ALMNH:Museum Staff trip identifier Alabama Museum of Natural History Staff Trip
ALMNH: Museum Expedition identifier Alabama Museum of Natural History Museum Expedition
Jegelewicz commented 12 months ago

@dustymc you can remove these two from the code table.
