Part IDs are becoming very useful
Glad to hear it, all reasonable, going next task.
step towards material sample ID.
Nope. "partID" is ephemeral - maybe it'll be there when you try to use it and great if so, maybe it won't and that's not unexpected, oh well. Persistent IDs - anything that we might want to consider citing or publishing (esp. under fancy names) - involve some curatorial commitment.
Can we get the option in the forms of making part IDs permanent on a case by case basis, eg as they are loaned? I cannot do blanket minting because of too much legacy garbage.

Tentatively tabling, I suspect this use case is handled by the current UI, please reopen and clarify if I'm just lost.
This is the form that needs the option of using a parent part ID instead of parent barcode: https://arctos.database.museum/loaders/BulkloadParts.cfm?action=ld The use case is for bulkloading parts that are subsamples of existing unbarcoded parts, usually because of legacy loans and returned legacy research samples or DNA extractions. We need to be able to create a subsample of the original part as the new part without having to first barcode the originals, especially if the original vial has been used up or split into multiple barcoded parts (think "heart, kidney, lung, spleen" part in a single cryovial split into "heart" and "kidney" and "lung" and "spleen" and "DNA" parts which are subsamples of the parent in new cryovials which are individually barcoded. I understand that @Nicole-Ridgwell-NMMNHS is using part identifiers in object tracking tools. This would allow the same in part bulkload.
Please add Parent Part ID to part bulkload template, in addition to parent barcode. I am increasingly having to use part IDs to distinguish multiple parts with the same part name, and not all of these are barcoded. Part IDs are becoming very useful, especially for distinguishing subsamples returned from loans when the parent loan subsample was not barcoded. This is another step towards material sample ID. @dustymc @Jegelewicz Priority: High. Needing to manage subsamples returned from loans, including extractions that were created from these subsamples, to track parent - child - child - child relationships.
