This is more of a hardware problem. The right sensor just hasn't been invented yet. A Kinect is heavy and requires a separate onboard computer. The Hokuyo cost as much as a used car.
Actually, this one is being worked on at the moment by Rob and Randy.... The intention is an SF02 and a 330 degree servo, a new library as well for future enhancements....
@squilter, Thanks for all your help, it's possible you're being a little too aggressive in closing down issues.
@rmackay9 sorry, I'll tone it down. There's just an overwhelming number of legitimate issues :)
You are both right. Sometimes you have to break out the chainsaw and see what survives. Closed can apparently be reopened if there is still interest, so it might be OK to crank up the chainsaw once a year.

after more than 2 years we are finally getting close :-). object avoidance using 360degree lidar is in AC3.4 with more improvements to be released in AC3.5.
This is included in AC3.5 so closing.
hey im still confuse about the schematic, im using sharp IR. any idea about the schematic ?
Possibly other types of sensors could be used as well like hokuyo laser range finder
