Flight Time Counter - Githubissues

I would be nice to have a flight time counter. We have an UAV that would like to loan but this will require a way to count the flight time.

After the loan we check the flight time counter. Off course that should be difficult to erase or modify that data. The idea is to never be possible to erase the counter, at least without a password.

Like a Hobbs meter. Interesting idea. It would've pretty easy to bypass, but maybe not so easy to leave no trace that it was bypassed. I can't imagine that there would be wide appeal for this feature, but maybe with the Pixhawk where there is plenty of excess space it can be done. Not many people are brave enough to rent out their birds.

I don't see any way of doing this. There's no WORM in pixhawk. And even if somebody did find a really clever solution, replacing the pixhawk is a reasonably cheap way of resetting the counter anyway.

Unless somebody disagrees, I'd like to close this issue.

There is a OTP key (one time programmable) it could be used to create this feature.

The feature is still a valid request. Why close it?

Okay, I'll leave it. I just think that it's important to restart a conversation or close it if nobody has said anything for a year.

For copter we could implement this by recording the time that the vehicle is armed and continuously adding it to a parameter. of course it would get blown away if you ever reset the vehicle so the user would need to be careful (or the ground station would need to take responsibility for saving/restoring the value after firmware upgrades). Replacing the SD card would also cause the time to be lost.

@squilter The other advantage of keeping these types of request is that they can be used for newbies who want to learn the code and contribute. It gives them a task to complete. May adding this to a 'long term' milestone to something would help. Anyway, just a suggestion

A non-resettable counter is definitely not a task for beginners. I'm not sure how the heck it would be accomplished.

But if we're now looking to make a simple parameter that accumulates time, that's totally doable. Also see #916 .

It would be nice to have it working. It's not for a rental like we do with cars. It's like a partnership with other company. Long term rent. They will work for us with our aircraft and will get a commission. Makes sense now the idea?

We now have a flight-time counter.

If people want the counter to be non-resettable, please open a new issue for that. I can't see a way of reliably doing that with PixHawk as it currently stands; a user could reasonably snapshot the PixHawk's universe and reinstate it undetectably after many flights. This is only hard for the first person; all subsequent people attempting to subvert it just follow the YouTube video instructions.

Presumably you could implement something harder to subvert on Linux-based autopilots using e.g. intel's tamper-proofing technology.

Frankly, probably better to trust your customer and offer services associated with their usage of the vehicle (e.g. post-flight analysis and vehicle health monitoring).

Again, please open another issue if you want tamper-proof counters.
