Great that you got this working on the MacOSX backend! I need to try on the Linux backend. I think we can do something better to automatically check matplotlib.backends.backend to see which we should use. But, hopefully matplotlib will fix their issues (or show us how to properly do it). I have two issues opened at matplotlib:
