Hello, I think it's a bit ridiculous, but I have my doubts. Will installing Asahi Linux format my Mac? (Can I install it without a Time Machine backup, and without losing any data? given that I have 250GB available). Thank you very much! PS: Why don't you have a discord page?

rowanG077 commented 7 months ago

You can install Asahi linux without formatting your mac. During the installation process it will ask how much space you want to give to Asahi linux.

DavidBuchanan314 commented 7 months ago

^ I would add that, although it'll be fine 99.9% of the time (it uses apple's own tools), it's generally advisable to do some kind of backup before modifying disk partitions.

Kinkazma commented 7 months ago

Thank you for your reply, and even if my question is one of little knowledge, the info is nowhere to be found. It might be a good idea to say so (even on the official page next to the download order).

Partitions in system disk (disk0):
1: APFS [Macintosh HD] (4.00 TB, 6 volumes)
    OS: [B*] [Macintosh HD] macOS v14.3.1 [disk3s1s1, 7B8FB65E-180E-45B7-A7B0-4466C46D35E9]
2: APFS (System Recovery) (5.37 GB, 2 volumes)
    OS: [ ] recoveryOS v14.3.1 [Primary recoveryOS]

  [B ] = Booted OS, [R ] = Booted recovery, [? ] = Unknown
  [ *] = Default boot volume

Using OS 'Macintosh HD' (disk3s1s1) for machine authentication.

Choose what to do:
r: Resize an existing partition to make space for a new OS
  q: Quit without doing anything
» Action (r): r

We're going to resize this partition:
APFS [Macintosh HD] (4.00 TB, 6 volumes)
  Total size: 4.00 TB
  Free space: 262.72 GB
  Available space: 1.95 GB
  Overhead: 222.77 GB
Minimum new size: 3.99 TB (99.95%)

Warning: The selected partition has a large amount of overhead space.
This prevents you from resizing the partition to a smaller size, even
though macOS reports that space as free.

This is usually caused by APFS snapshots used by Time Machine, which
use up free disk space and block resizing the partition to a smaller
size. It can also be caused by having a pending macOS upgrade.

If you want to resize your partition to a smaller size, please complete
any pending macOS upgrades and visit this link to learn how to manually

» Continue anyway? (y/N):

I don't know what to do about that. 😅 help !

check your macOS is latest update if it is already, either :

btw, using time machine on the same disk is pretty ... useless if your disk fail, then time machine backup is also gone...

delete your time machine, check your partitions are clean/default (https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/Partitioning-cheatsheet) and re-enable it but this time on an external ssd

Je ne sais pas quoi faire à ce sujet. 😅 Aidez-nous !

vérifiez que votre macOS est bien mis à jour si c'est déjà le cas, soit :

  • désactiver temporairement Time Machine, redémarrer, relancer le script

I did all that, and it didn't even change a single value. I waited, restarted my computer, of course deactivated time machine. Nothing worked. I've read your links, and I still don't understand this delta between free space and available space that's being maintained.

Foul-Tarnished commented 7 months ago

your partitions are weird then... just continue the install anyway, you can always DFU if you have another mac... but backup stuff somewhere else of course
