Resolution question #245

Over time I have noticed that the files that GIA is producing are getting larger and larger and this is starting to cause me storage issues. Whilst most of our viewing is done at home on a 46" TV, its also used to import content to iPads and tablets for travelling, and these huge file sizes are causing issues there, requiring time-consuming conversions, and then duplicated files.

By downgrading the BBC format to "Better" instead of "Best" this obviously reduces the file size but the output is no longer HD. Previously, looking at shows I downloaded in 2016 say, 1 hour of HD was roughly 1GB of file, (Close To the Enemy, 1280x720, 2350kbps total frame rate, for example) and nowadays its more like double that (Line of Duty Series 5, around 2.0 GB 1280x720, 5034kbps total frame rate, per 1 hour show). What can i do to reduce today's file size whilst retaining HD output? Can I select setting that will mimic the older 1GB per hr files? I did have a look at the thread about get_iplayer download modes, but being a bit of programming biff I got a bit lost to be honest... Sorry if this is a dumb question, and thanks in advance for any advice.

Good question @pmhird, I have noticed this too and had to do a tidy up on my storage.

Keen to hear any explanations and possible solutions.

From a little bit more research, it seems to have coincided with the switch from 25fps to 50fps. However if you switch to 25fps in preferences there frequently aren’t 25fps versions of recent shows. I tried a couple of downloads on “better” instead of “best” and there’s an appreciable quality difference on a 46” screen, whilst the difference between 50 and 25fps at the same resolution is totally undetectable by the naked eye in my view! So basically it’s downloading twice as many frames as my eyes need!

At least hard drive storage is getting cheaper all the time...!
