Get iPlayer Automator Version 1.24.0 (20220621002) Incredibly Slow download speed (I'm talking hours!) #409

This has got to be the slowest version of Get iPlayer Automator yet. Downloading a small file (1.8 GB) took nearly two hours! Can anything be done to speed things up?

No problems here and don't be so ungrateful, we're lucky to have Scott put in all his efforts or we wouldn't have anything at all.

get_iplayer is actually doing the downloading, but in any event... if you are using a VPN/smart DNS service, change providers. I had been with one for a long time but recently downloads through them had slowed to a crawl. I switched services and now get 60mb/s, which is probably the fastest I've had in some time. I have to switch back and forth occasionally because of other problems, but it works.

If you are in the UK I'm not sure what to suggest.

Hi all, and thanks again Scott for your supreme and valued work. Not sure if this breaks rules, but a personal recommendation is WiTopia's VPN - I've been using for years now, really responsive team who have previously helped me out with the needs of this program. A discount link here: https://my.personalvpn.com/ref/CrX8KZVV Note: If you’re in a blocked location, try substituting jumpthewall.net for personalvpn.com

Tried that VPN - just as slow as the one I already had - no big improvement. Unfortunately they do not offer a trail so paid for a month and getting the same speed.

I did not mean to criticise Scott for his work. I very much appreciate his great app. I am in the UK and I do not use a VPN while I am downloading. I just do not understand why downloads take so long. They didn't use to take so long with previous versions.

It's all good... if you want to compare you can get an older release from the Releases page. You might want to try get_iplayer directly from the command line as well to see if there's a difference.

I'm also in the UK with a 500mb connection and no VPN, I've just downloaded King of Thieves which is just over 3gb and the whole process took around two minutes. Could it be something else slowing your connection?

Thanks.

I use ethernet for my connection and it's broadband internet.

GiA is noticeably slower for me too. Agree it's the slowest it's ever been. It moves 1% approx every 1-2 seconds. The fans go wild when downloading.

The same thing happens with me!
