Is this patch compatible with other patches, or if the game was installed via Sierra Help installers? #8

I'm a member over at Vogons and I have a feeling I've downloaded some QFG4 patches at some point, maybe it was something to correct a midi sound effect I'm not really sure I remember. I also think I originally installed the game with the Sierra Help installer (and I'm not exactly sure what all the installer does).

Is this patch compatible with either of or both of these things? Or do you have to apply it to a fresh install? Would there be any need for any other known patches after installing this one?

Hi Imills,

Thank you so much for downloading! I believe that you are thinking of the genmidi driver and voice audio patches for Sierra games including QFG3 & 4, compiled by tikalat on Vogons. Please rest assured that my patch only modifies game code: scripts (.src), memory heaps (.hep), and some very minor corrections to message files (.msg) and view files (.v56). They should be fully compatible, as there is no interaction between the two patches. As an aside, I highly recommend using either the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas with Falcosoft MIDI Player and LoopMIDI virtual driver, or a real Roland SC55mk2 sound module to play QFG4. It's the DEFINITIVE way to listen to the soundtrack!!

The Sierra Help Installer, to the best of my knowledge, takes the game files from your physical CDs and installs them seamlessly alongside DosBox. At the same time, they copy the NRS patch files to the PATCHES folder for QFG4 (with the exception of 53.scr - bugged Wraith Burrow), or the main game folder for all previous QFG games. As I understand it, you don't need the SHP installer if you're using the GoG or Steam copies.

My patch includes the NRS fixes and builds on top of them. Ideally, you should first install QFG4 regardless of where you bought it, then copy my files into the PATCHES folder in your QFG4 directory and overwrite anything there.

I hope this answers your question. Please feel free to ask if you need any more assistance! I've just finished setting up my new computer, coming off of the holidays, and I'm trying to get back in gear. =)
