After the results achieved in #291 it is pretty clear that doing retroactive merges of nodes is not a good idea. As such the supporting logic around that feature, underlays and overlays, might be able to be torn out entirely. Once all known attributes are handled by the xml_converter we should re-evaluate if those functions are necessary, and remove them if not.
