Not sure of how text search works behind the scenes for APPD but there is an open user query about a case where they can't find any results for a text search on a species name that definitely has occurrence records linked to it. The example in this case is "Ericaceae".
The workaround that has been advised to the user in the meantime is to browse for it using facets, which does work in this case. However, that is not a valid solution in general as it doesn't allow for cases where there are multiple matches that would apply for a text query which would be hard or impossible to formulate using the browse method.
