A user has reported a 504 gateway time-out error activating a new account from the email link, ~2 hours ago.
They said it spends a while loading and ultimately ends in a '504 gateway time-out'.
However, the account was successfully activated regardless (user let us know it was resovled a few minutes later)

Cause is downstream timeout from alerts. Fix by lowering timeout on webservice calls.
