chore: rearrange settings, fix typos, tweak README #11

Did another pass on the README to make some things clearer, and to remove a reference to a package setting that I decided not to implement after all.

Also made some tweaks to the settings.

@UziTech, once this lands, I think we'll be ready for the first release.
