Anyway seems to be faster on OSX, but I don't have the numbers. Also sorry for not polishing method names and for skipping docs.

(fun fact, I ended up doing some similar stuff here)

@elia, I actually have some large changes to push to master here in the next few days that could affect how this works. Once those changes are pushed, let's revisit this to see where we can apply it.
