1: The Commuter As a commuter in Queens, I want to check my regular weekday lines for any problems before heading into work, so I know what to expect on my commute into work. This will help me decide if I should adjust my normal route, or notify the office if I expect to be late. This is a daily routine, and I normally head the same way each morning. I care about Queens and Manhattan, not Brooklyn, The Bronx or Staten Island. When it's time to commute home, I want to know if my normal subway station has delays. Should I head to union Square, or is it better to walk to 6th Ave from an F line without delays? -- I might care about a single direction, depending upon the time of day.
2: The Weekender As a resident of Brooklyn, I have weekend plans to meet friends in Manhattan for brunch. When should I leave? Are my lines messed up? Are trains bypassing my stations? I want to know the big road blocks, so I can plan what time to leave. If I'm headed home, is my line running? Will my commute be much longer if I leave after midnight? It's the weekend, and who knows where my plans will take me today. -- I might not be going to the same place, or I might have several, chained destinations.
3: The Tourist I am visiting New York, and I want to know if the subway map I was given is reality, given planned work and delays. I want to plan out my day, and I want to know if this train will go where it says it will. If the current map won't be the same in an hour, I want to know what it will look like long term. Is the line I left my hotel from the same line I can use to get back? I know landmarks, and if my ride is interrupted, I might get lost finding my way back to the hotel. -- My hotel is a left turn and 2 blocks from the 49th St R train entrance.
