This issue is in the context of information systems and authoring / observing devices. A device is a type of manufactured item used in the provision healthcare that is not substantially changed throughout that activity. A device may be a medical or non-medical device.
The Agency has known requirements for typing information system devices that are:
There look to be a number of suitable concepts that are children of 706593004 |Information system| and potentially 462240000 |Patient health record information system| is considered to be suitable to type many of the information system devices above though I am confused at the differentiation in hierarchy between 1085211000168105 |DHS Medicare repository services| and 1084991000168108 |My Health Record system|.
Possibly what may be appropriate are for information systems like the NCSR or Medicare are concepts for national health data repository services and/or state health data repository services or some variant thereof.
NOTE: The name for 1085211000168105 |DHS Medicare repository services| uses a deprecated Gov Dept name. May need to be updated?
Request provided to ADHA Terminology function to identify (or create if needed) the SNOMED CT-AU terms that support typing the above information system devices noting that the list is not intended to prescribe concept decomposition levels.
Request is managed through FHIR Terminology Requests FTR-1473.
Element | Definition |
---|---|
Suggested Title of Value Set | Information System Device Type |
Suggested URI | https://healthterminologies.gov.au/fhir/ValueSet/information-system-device-type-1 |
Suggested Description | The Information System Device Type value set includes values that may be used to indicate the type of device that authors or otherwise records digital health information. |
Terminologies included | SNOMED CT |
Compose requirements | Made up of the SNOMED CT concepts identified via the work item managed via FHIR Terminology Requests FTR-1473 |
Business Reason for Request | To support the exchange of digital health information in Australia as part of the the current work plan initiative: NCSR integration with MHR system. This set of values also serves integration with other repositories (e.g. Medicare), system-generated views (e.g. Medicines View from the MHR system), consumer wearable devices, and other device mediated exchanges. |
This request is managed by FHIR Terminology Requests FTR-1555
Agency Terminology have advised the following concepts address requests 8 of 10 with the two remaining in progress.

Electronic Management Systems, systems such as those managing electronic medication charts, prescribing, ordering, supplying, decision support | 1617351000168100 | Electronic medication management system | Electronic medication management system (physical object) | |
1617361000168103 | eMR (electronic medical record) system | Electronic medical record system (physical object) | Electronic medical record system | |
Pathology systems | 464280008 | Pathology information system | Pathology information system (physical object) | |
Radiology systems | 463286009 | Radiology information system | Radiology information system (physical object) |
For this project and others including the forthcoming aged care work we need to identify the appropriate concepts, preferrably in SNOMED CT, to type the information systems, these devices are stores of data or generate data. For example Meds View is generated by the MHR system – it is not a practitioner curated view – providing this context is important when exchanging and using digital health information. Similarly capturing the source of the data e.g. the source of immunisation data is from a national repository or from a primary care clinical information system is important.
