Discussion about Kp alerts < 3 #17

This was reported to me in a review, and I'm creating an issue for it, as others might like to weigh in on it.

Recently in 0.9.7 I limited the possible range for aurora alerts to between 3 and 9 inclusive. This was due to a few reasons:

  1. More push notifications = more potential cost if lots of people sign up for a low-Kp alert.
  2. As Kp is always hovering around 1-3, you'd get alerted near constantly

I'm happy to reverse this decision if there's a good use case for such a thing. I'm waiting for more info from the reviewer before I proceed, but the question is out there:

What use cases would you have for Kp alerts less than 3?

After watching several Aurora Borealis notification pages on Facebook, I realise that an Aurora can be seen in higher latitudes on Kps less than 3.

I'm going to allow lower Kps soon, but that decision may change again as I monitor how many notifications are being sent out per month.

Update on this: Notifications will be re-done as part of v2 of the API, as part of a push away from Ionic's cloud services.

This'll definitely be done in v2, and is already in place (but without a front-end to hook it up). The Kp limitation will still apply to SMS, as that costs money.
