Just as a note if somebody ever fixes this: it seems not to be the sprite shifting, because creating a unique dmi for it bugged it too. Maybe it's that it uses no sprite on the back or something to do with how lighting works?
It is possibly intentional because the back is higher than the head and obscures view of the head when seen from behind.
When facing north with a hardhat that's on, the sprite is wonky.
