Tiled Galleries: dynamic columns number for small screens #11781

Right now, Tiled Galleries look the same on desktop and on mobile. If 3 columns were created on desktop, the same three columns will be displayed on mobile, even though that makes some of the images really small.

It would be nice if the layout could adapt to mobile devices, and break down to 2, then only 1 column so the images are as large as they could be on mobile devices.

I'll move this to Calypso repository where Tiled gallery development these days happens; while this issue was opened the classic tiled gallery in mind, we have the same issue in the block version as well.

The existing Tiled Gallery block should resize nicely, but could also respond dynamically to mobile screens, perhaps displaying a single column.

If we have a clear path forward, we can implement some changes.

I'm not convinced this makes sense. Once the tiled gallery is just one column, its just the same as a list of images on the page. It seems like if a user chose a tiled gallery its because they like the way that the images are easy to preview quickly. If users want to see them at a larger size and flick through them then they can always open the lightbox.

Maybe not down to 1 column because it could potentially make a page/post extremely long but I can this is being reduced to 2 columns on small screens. This would be a good bargain to avoid tiny images on small screen devices.

Just to demonstrate this — a tiled gallery with "columns" layout, 320px wide using 6, 4 and 2 columns:

Perhaps a checkbox "adjust a number of columns depending on screen width" would be useful.

Id rather limit how many options we show users. If it's a bad experience then lets just fix it :)
