VideoPress: Add Option To Disable Download of VideoPress #9603

Open jobakb opened 6 years ago

jobakb commented 6 years ago

Currently, the videopress articles claim that you can disable sharing or download of your video content via videopress, however, after testing, this is not the case. If you right click on desktop browsers, you can select 'save as' to download the video

If you play videopress on chrome browser on Android, there is a little download icon (very visible) to download the video

Please ensure that all means of downloading video content can be disabled permanently

BurlesonBrad commented 6 years ago

could we also add the option to simply whitelist the videos so that playback is entirely restricted to the site

jeherve commented 6 years ago

cc @pgk who may be able to give us more information about the work he's been doing with VideoPress and private videos.

At this point the project @jeherve mentioned is not part of Jetpack.

While disabling sharing removes the sharing menu, it's still possible to download the video from your browser.

I gotta notification for this when the Calypso bot @matticbot decided to add a label, so I thought I'd just take a minute to swing back over here and remind folks of the "connect-both-sides-of-the-equation" approach:

WordPress's market share is bigger than Vimeo & Wistia You have the power, the people, the resources, and the programmers OpenSouce is skippy, but folks still gotta eat Jetpack has a huge revenue opportunity for paid plans Premium is already hosting & delivering terabytes of video

1.) Add domain level restrictions for video + remove front end prompt to download.

2.) Don't run down the rabbit hole of "someone can always download it". Just remove the front end option to download and add domain level privacy.

3.) Then run to the bank with newly found revenue from Professional (or Premium) paid Jetpack plans

This shouldn't be labelled "Happiness Request".
This should be labelled "Just Damn Smart Business"

👍

I don't think these developers are doing anything about videopress player. After all these months, I checked it out and nothing has changed. People just get yourself FVPlayer and you're sorted.

Or these jetpack people should also modify flowplayer and replace video press player with that

jeherve commented 5 years ago

I'll keep this issue opened as we may still get to this feature request at some point in the future. When we do, we'll update this issue!

yodelacuesta commented 5 years ago

aww I was about to get videopress for my membership site but seems like I'll have to settle with VIMEO. I hope they fix this

User from 2663177-zen canceled their Jetpack Premium plan.

BurlesonBrad commented 4 years ago

...and... @pmciano , did they mention what they were going with instead?

Lemme mention again: 💡Can this scale? ✅ yup 💡Does it add incredible value to Premium? ✅yep

Knowing that each zen is representative of thousands not heard, what is holding this back?

pmciano commented 4 years ago

did they mention what they were going with instead?

@BurlesonBrad Nothing to report in this regard, but we appreciate your feedback.

I can see that this has been going for a while... I think the video hosting service is good but disabling or making it difficult to download the videos should be considered as an essential feature in 2020!

Hello,

I would like to have this functionality too, but I found a temporary solution via code.

<video oncontextmenu="return false;" id="my-video-player" width="854" height="480" controls autoplay>
  <source src="https://example.com/link-to-my-video.mp4" type="video/mp4">
</video>

I was about to buy the annual membership with the Black Friday Reduction to 36$, but seeing that this functionality is still lacking, I will rather stay with vimeo, even if it will be given free, it is not worth it !
