Playback: Distorted Playback or Audio Quality Issues When Listening Over Bluetooth #54

Open pocketcasts opened 2 years ago

pocketcasts commented 2 years ago

This is for compiling any cases related to distorted playback when listening with Bluetooth devices, in case it helps us find a common cause.

Audio quality when playing back a podcast at higher speeds noticeably worse on iOS than on android. It’s almost grainy, which doesn’t happen with the same podcast episode at the same 1.2x speed on android.

App Version: 7.20.2 Device: iPhone12,8 OS: 15.6.1

Bluetooth device: Anker Soundcore Life Dot 2

I’ve recently moved from android to IOS. I’m experiencing notable audible distortion when the podcast is sped up to 1.1x

iPhone 14 Pro App version 7.28.1 (7.28.1.0) iOS 16.2 Bluetooth earphones (Soundcore by Anker Life P3)

Btw, I can replicate this when listening to podcasts at 1.1 playback speed and can confirm that it is happening with the phone speakers too and isn't specifically related to Bluetooth

@joashrajin the 7.30.0.1 beta version should have that fixed. Let me know what do you think. :)

leandroalonso commented 1 year ago

Unfortunately, the fix caused some other issues and we're reverting it for now.

leandroalonso commented 1 year ago

An update on that:

Turns out there is no easy fix for this. The pitch algorithms we use right now are suited for voice. The "distortion" is more evident when there's music, but changing the algorithm to one that suits music highly affects the overall sound quality.

We can still gather the reports here to be sure of many users perceive/are affected by that. Then in the future, we can look into it, but as of now, this is something we'll have to live with.

App Version: 7.32.0.1 Device: iPhone 13 Pro OS: 16.3.1 Bluetooth device: AirPods Pro 2 Enabled Playback Effects:

I'm experiencing what sounds like audio clipping. Volume boost seems like the effect that's most strongly causing it.

(As an aside, Pocket Casts seems to boost volume more aggressively than other podcast clients I've tried when using that kind of setting...)

I’m not sure if this is helpful or not, but if I have both AirPods in I notice the audio issue pretty heavily. Seems like it’s a stereo separation audio issue or something. If I just place one AirPod in I don’t notice the issue at all.

App Version: 7.36.0.3 Device: iPhone 12 Pro OS: 16.4.1 Bluetooth device: AirPods Pro 2 or Sony WH1000XM3 Enabled Playback Effects: none (everything is default, I don’t usually use effects).

I’ve been occasionally experiencing audio glitches like skipping or clipping, as if I had a bad internet connection (not likely as episodes are downloaded) or something is wrong with my Bluetooth earphones or headset. I usually go with the AirPods Pro 2, but sometimes use my good old Sony WH1000XM3 headset. This seems to occur only with Pocket Casts and not when using YouTube Music or watching YouTube videos. I’m even trying Overcast now for podcasts and haven’t experienced this so far, so it must be an issue with Pocket Casts. Let me know if there’s any logs or extra data I could send to help with this.

App Version: 7.37.0.2 Device: iPhone 13 Pro Max OS: 16.4.1 Bluetooth device: AirPods Pro 2 Enabled Playback Effects: none

Also getting audio distortion when playing a podcast for the first time. Most of the time I see this when "Skip First" is set to something > 0s. An episode starts downloading, starts playing at the required offset, and then I hear a slight pause/clipping when the episode completes downloading. The episode otherwise plays ok except for the initial playback as described. I also tried the same procedure in Overcast - which works fine.

App Version: 7.67 Device: iPhone16,1 OS: 17.5.1

Bluetooth: Apple or Sonos speakers No playback effects enabled.

Ever since you did the upgrade, pocket cast is very unpredictable. It will not stay connected to Bluetooth and keeps fading in and out. Not good. Please fix this. ( I use apples podcast with no problem so it’s not my issue. It’s your issue.)

it's airplay to sonos or my home speakers (bluetooth). podcast just keeps fading out and back in again. i'm using an iphone 15 pro I was playing "the daily" podcast and NPR upfirst podcast. When I switched over to apple podcast - no problems occur. this has only been happening since i installed the upgrade a few days ago.

no playback effects 2 podcasts - already mentioned - upfirst and the daily - and when I send them to the apple podcast no problem. today - seemed to work ok.
all of this after your upgrade.
