iOS 16: issue with Spatial Audio #62

Closed pocketcasts closed 1 year ago

pocketcasts commented 2 years ago

The app has issues playing podcasts when Spatial Audio is enabled when using the EffectsPlayer.

While this does seem to be an issue (or at least a change) on Apple's side, other apps don't have the same behavior, so it's better to look at it to avoid having this issue when iOS 16 is released.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

You'll need to test that on a real device with iOS 16 beta + AirPods Pro (or Max).

  1. Play any podcast on PocketCasts
  2. Swipe down to show the control center
  3. Tap and hold on your volume settings
  4. Tap "Spatialize Stereo"
  5. Tap Fixed or Head Tracked
  6. Search for the podcast "The Rizzuto Show"
  7. Download an episode
  8. Try to play it
  9. You'll see that the playback won't start

(A few times it might be that this work, just kill and reopen the app and try again).

User reports that they are having occasional issues with episodes not playing when listening through AirPods, even when the episode is downloaded.

Reported on: #5295596-zen with iOS 16

Pocketcast was working very well but after the end of one podcast last night there’s no audio through my AirPods Pro. It works on the iPhone speaker.

They then mentioned:

Yes - found a temporary fix is to forget the iPods and then re pair - this worked for half the day / then broke again! Seems like it won’t even progress / play the audio if paired to AirPods - works with wired headphones

I have dev iOS 16 and my AirPods Pro do not work with this app. My Powerbeats Pro do work however. And my AirPods Pro work with all other audio/video apps I’ve tried - except this app.

App Version: 7.19.3 Device: iPhone14,3 OS: 16.0

Another report: #5318436-zen

In iOS 16 beta db1 and db2 Bluetooth headsets such as Beats Pro AirPods Pro etc don’t work properly

I don’t get sound when switching to them.

The only work around atm is to set the sound output to my iMac and then switch back to the headphones

Podcasts not playing over Airpods

I am using an iPhone 11 Pro Max on iOS 16 Public Beta 1. I noticed my podcasts won’t play when my AirPods Pro are connected.

I’m an early adopter, running on iOS 16. Since upgrading SOME of my podcasts in pocketcasts (The Hitch, Oh No Ross and Carrie) do not put out sound on my AirPod pro headphones. The UI shows the AirPods as the output device but no sound comes out. When I switch to another podcast in my queue the audio comes to the AirPods with no issue. The audio for all of my podcasts comes out fine from the iPhone speaker as well, so I know the podcast is playing. I am able to switch to Spotify podcasts to work around this, and I assume it’s an issue with the beta iOS, but wanted to let you guys know about this possible bug.

Since upgrading to the iOS 16 beta, podcasts will download successfully, play for a min then stop and I get a corrupted message in the app. I’ve tried redownloading these episodes but it doesn’t seems to fix it. Some podcasts are ok while others have this issue.

I’ve been using the iOS 16 public beta and found that pocket casts rarely works with Apple AirPods. No issues with other headphones, Bluetooth speakers, or playing through the iPhone speakers. Just AirPods where when you press play the podcast doesn’t progress. Restarting the app, the phone, and reinstalling pocket casts didn’t work.

CameronMilliken commented 2 years ago

While trying to play through my Apple AirPods via Bluetooth I have found sporadic podcasts unable to play. I push play and nothing happens- no audio and the podcast time counter does not advance. When this happens I am still able to play music via Spotify and other apps.

This is a daily issue. I have had it with several podcasts including The Dave Ramsey Show, TWIT This Week In Tech, and DTNS Daily Tech News Show. It has been both streamed and downloaded podcasts. I am not able to reliably reproduce it. I did not notice it prior to the beta.

I’ve been listening to the trainer road ask the cycling coach podcast for year, including with my AirPod pros. Suddenly, the podcast won’t play when using my AirPod pros. If I switch the AirPods off the podcast plays fine including in the car. This is the only podcast with this issue. I am using the iOS beta.

Several podcasts I listen to Sri playing after about 15 seconds. Not through AirPods. I switch to the phone, it plays. AirPods, not so much. Not every podcast, only a few. Any thoughts?

The issue is the at I’ll click play, and nothing happens, doesn’t matter which play button I press it doesn’t play. It looks like it starts, but then stops. I’ve tried rebooting my phone, reinstalling pocket casts, deleting and redownloading the episode, and even unsubscribing from the feed and re-subscribing.

The user says it started when they downloaded iOS 16.

Longer podcast (~15mins+ is what I've noticed so far) do not play if I try and listen through my airpods pro. Short podcasts work, but not longer ones. If I try and play the same podcast through a different client (I tested Spotify), the podcast plays fine.

I’ve noticed a bug that’s been happening g for a while. I’m on the iOS 16 beta. I’m having issue with AirPods Pro and downloaded podcasts - they won’t play at all. To fix it I have to turn off auto downloads for Up Next, remove the downloaded podcast and stream it. I find the problem is local to my AirPods and not other headphones.

Reported in #5496078-zen:

I’m running the latest public beta of iOS 16 and Pocket Casts doesn’t work with AirPods.

CameronMilliken commented 2 years ago

I am noticing a peculiar issue with hangs however. At first I thought it might be because I had imported an OPML file from OverCast, but after I tried to add a new podcast, it froze up again. I can force quit the app, and after it is relaunched, the other podcasts seem to be fine, as long as I don't tap on the podcasts that make the app hang. I am using the iOS 16 beta (public beta, number 4), so I'm not sure whether it is due to the new OS or whether there is something wrong with the app. I have not encountered problems with other apps using the betas, so I'm guessing it is an app specific bug.

I've not noticed this on iOS 15 or 16.

I'm having issues on iOS 16 beta where pocketcasts won't work with airpod pros. It will work with other bluetooth headphones or playing directly from the phone, just not with the airpods. Are you familiar with the issue/is there a fix?

CameronMilliken commented 2 years ago

+1 at #5498385-zen

So the playback issue seems correlated to using Airpods. It's only when I'm using Airpods, when episodes will just refuse to play but oddly it only happens with some podcasts.

iOS 16 and Airpods Pro.

Spatial audio seems to interfere with AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Turning off spatial audio seems to fix the issue.

When connect iPhone to my AirPod Pros, certain podcasts refuses to play even after pressing the Play button.

I've asked them to try turning off spatial audio. Thanks for sharing @ezebecke!

5544744-zen User reports: This is fixed after updating to stable iOS 16

erricgunawan commented 2 years ago

5557605-zen:

Ever since updating to iOS 16 I hear crackling when I listen to podcasts using my AirPods. I have tested other apps and no other audio has problems.

App Version: 7.21.1 Device: iPhone12,3 OS: 16.0

Asked them if they already have a stable iOS 16 version and to turn off spatial audio.

erricgunawan commented 2 years ago

Possibly related/same issue (although some conditions look different):

I feel like this is related to new iOS. I push play and after second it stops. I deleted the app and reloaded it and still happening. If I reboot my phone it fixes the problem. I am on version 16.02

Happens on all locations. Literally plays for less than a second then stops. Reboot fixes it. This is also happening with Spotify in the same way.

No VPNs. When it happens it does happen for every podcast. Once it happens it seems like only one out of it is to reboot my phone. Yesterday I reset my network settings. It only started happening after iOS 16. It happens regardless of listening mode. When it happens I have tried going only wireless or only cellular and still happens.

App Version: 7.23 Device: iPhone12,1 OS: 16.0.2
