Consolidation of duplicated tags #2576

Expected

I have duplicated tags (two tags with the same name). I delete one of the two tags. The notes shall remain in the remaining (single) tag.

Observed

The notes loose the tag at all. (I have many notes.)

Remark

The new appearance of duplicated tags is avoided with Simplenote versions starting with 2.x

@gubrist The best workaround is probably to rename one of the tags, change all the tags to the new tag name, and then delete the original duplicate and rename the tag back to its original name. Sorry for the bother. We had some ideas for fixing this situation automatically but I'm not sure if we can do it without introducing more bugs.

Thanks, I have tried with Simplenote 2.4.0 the following:

Renamed of the two:

into

...and surprisingly, all notes of BerufBildung were "moved" immediately (I saw some short wobbling on the screen) to the renamed BerufBildung2.

Then, I tried to delete BerufBildung by presseing the red delete cross (x). But nothing happened. So, I tried it several times and finally it was deleted.

But all notes lost BerufBildung2 and got untagged.

So I have created BerufBildung3 and currently, I have to use on the Android Version "Untagged notes" to find and re-tag them (this feature does not exist with electon, yet)

Duplicated tags arise again with electron Version 2.5.0.

I wonder if this feature request (as designed with the Android version 2.5.1 of Simplenote) could prevent from Duplicated tags:

Hi @gubrist,

When you say "arise again", do you mean that you are still seeing new duplicate tags created? Can you please provide the steps that are causing duplicate tags for you?

Yes, unfortunately duplicate tags are created again, happended gradually, "silent" in the last weeks and days

No, unfortunately: I whished I could say when and how this happens.

I strongly assume it happens when you have to type the (existing) tag (again) each time to tag a new note.

The following features may prevent form duplicated tags:

a) https://github.com/Automattic/simplenote-electron/issues/2423

b) With the Android version, you don't have to type each time, but can choose it from the pull-down list.

Possibly another one from 4744355-zen:

  • All notes associated with several tags are duplicated in the Linux app and Web app (?), and the last notes created in Android app does not appear.
  • It only happens in the Linux app and the web app.
  • On Android app and W10 app it goes well (?).

I have tried to completely uninstall the Linux app, but when I reinstall it they appear duplicates again. I no longer use prohibited characters. Just '='.

I have some problems with my Tag (folders) which seem to duplicate. The Problem is twofold 1) If I delete the tag, I will also lose notes from both (this has happened previously) 2) I renamed the tag similarly but with an added number at the end. Not that empty tag will not delete at all ?

Suggested the workaround from here but the result:

I have tried those steps already, hence the names;, Ultro-Outline, Ultro-Ouline2, Ultro-Ouline 3. The first two were duplicated until the third, and as you can see, I'm left with a new set of duplicates each time. I have tried again using a new tag. I'm left with one tag label (Ultro-Ouline3) but... I can't now delete the tag even though there are zero notes using it. Sending a screenshot here, showing how I click on the "delete tag?" but it remains. It will not delete ? Half way there perhaps?

This is still a major issue - I've been using simple note for my A-Level notes and didn't notice the amount of duplicate tags. I have over 300+ tags which are duplicated.

Is there any workaround? I tried the one linked above but it didn't work.

I have over 8500 notes and around 20 original tags (the tags are rather static with me).

Unfortunately, I cannot trace back when the latest tag has been duplicated.

But so far most of the tags have been duplicated and the tag list has become far too long to navigate; I have to scroll down a lot and seeing almost every tag duplicated is quite dizzy.

What is the actual situation after two years? 1) Has the bug been identified? 2) Is there a sustainable fix, now? 3) Is therea a feasable way to remove the duplicated tags - without complete loss of the original task in the notes?

I have created a new tag today morning. In the evening, it has been duplicated.
