We should probably have unit tests and test themes / content types that can be used to validate checks.

Totally agree! Do you have a preferred method of dealing with this. All of the unit tests I've ever created in an adhoc manner.

+1, this is important, especially as we start to rely on Scanner more heavily on VIP.
