Incorrect error message when installing child theme with missing parent theme #21540

Open julsyd opened 6 years ago

julsyd commented 6 years ago

Steps to reproduce

  1. Starting at URL: https://wordpress.com/themes/upload/
  2. Upload a child theme without installing a parent theme.

Genesis Sample child theme (requires Genesis parent): https://cloudup.com/cNt_fuHTbFh

What I expected

I expected to see a message like this, which is what appears in WP Admin:

The parent theme could not be found. You will need to install the parent theme, genesis, before you can use this child theme.

What happened instead

I saw this incorrect/misleading message (on self-hosted Jetpack and AT sites):

Upload problem: Theme already installed on site.

Browser / OS version

Chrome Version 63.0.3239.132 / MacOS High Sierra 10.13.2
