Big +1 to this issue. I just ran into this with a Quick Start/Concierge user. They could not figure out how to replace the "W" logos (primary menu also set as social menu) with the needed social icons and it was a real big blocker for them.
The Social Links Menu, supported by many themes, is a convenient way for a site to display links to social profiles, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
When a supported social profile is added to the Social Menu, and that menu is assigned to the theme's Social Menu location, the corresponding icon is automatically displayed. The social menu also supports email links in the

format, displaying an envelope icon – as well as links to WordPress.com sites – displaying a WordPress icon for those. Here’s what a correctly set up social menu looks like:
The social menu only works as intended when you use the Custom Link option in the menu, adding links to supported social profiles, or an email address in the correct format, or a WordPress.com site.
The problem is that none of this functionality is obvious, so users often use it inappropriately, resulting in this:
Problem above: User has assigned a regular navigation menu to the Social Menu location
Or this:

Improvements
Could we think of ways to make the Social Links menu more bulletproof, so we’re less likely to see instances of the above? For example, here are a couple of ideas that mitigate against both types of scenarios above:
I'm sure there are other ideas that could also help.
Note that we may want to limit the scope of this issue to themes using the Jetpack Social Menu, which has a consistent set of supported social icons.
