Good idea.
It might still be good to have a reminder elsewhere? Like under Upgrades > Plans
or Purchases
(in the corresponding plan).
Thanks @donalirl. Will be looking into this soon, we want to migrate all of the domain message from the left nav bar to another location.
Moved to The One Board for prioritisation

@Automattic/nomado greetings! Is this a potentially easy lift that could be prioritised soon for a "fit and finish" improvement on Dotcom?
@inaikem I actually thought that someone (maybe on MarTech??) had actually done this already. But I'll add this to our next sprint and we'll research it and handle it if necessary.
Thanks Del! I thought it had been raised before, too. I most recently raised it as a point of feedback for A4A-provisioned sites but that request stalled 🤔
@Automattic/martech 👋 Are you aware of any work already done to dismiss the free domain offer?
I am not aware of any past work that allows to dismiss this upsell. I would strongly recommend that we design an experiment - this domain upsell drives a fair bit of conversions, so it would be good to understand the impact of modifying it. Even small changes here might create an outsized impact (positive or negative).
I did a little bit of research, but I don't believe that this nudge is used anywhere any longer. It looks like we only show the large "free domain card" at the bottom of the domains list for cases where there is a domain credit available. @niranjan-uma-shankar am I missing something?
Feel free to ignore if this is irrelevant, but I see what I believe to be the relevant nudge atop the sidebar of my Atomic WPCOM site that uses a custom domain purchased elsewhere.
Ah...you're right. I see it now. Thanks @dcalhoun
However, please, do not run any change without a holdout group and an experiment. This can negatively impact the domain credit utilization.
Adding a couple of notes for the future.
Nudge is here: fbhepr%2Skers%2Sjcpbz%2Sjc%2Qpbagrag%2Syvo%2Swrgcnpx%2Qwvgz%2Swvgz%2Qratvar.cuc%232408%2Q2408-og
Looks like we get about 1100 domains registered per month from that nudge.
Thanks, Del. I don't have access to that link, but could you tell me if the 1,100 registrations are for sites that already have a custom domain connected or for sites without a custom domain?
Since we're a few comments deep, I'll also reiterate that the request for the record:
Allow the domain upsell message to be dismissed from the nav bar after the site has an external domain connected.
I'd recommend we relocate the upsell to the domain management/listing pages elsewhere on WPcom to ensure that users can still use their credit if they change their mind in the future.
@inaikem and @donalirl If I had a site that already had a custom domain assigned to it, I would not want to see this upgrade at all. I would not want to have to dismiss this upsell, I just wouldn't want to see it. I agree that moving the nudge to a different part of the interface is fine (if they did want to claim it and pay for it after the first year). But for a primary surface, it's a lot of unneeded clutter. Adding a domain to a site is what I'd consider a primary task for any site owner, and if someone has already done it, we shouldn't penalize the site owner with clutter.

What
Provide the option to dismiss the "free domain available" notice from the dashboard
Why
Not all customers wish to claim a free domain registration with us, most commonly because they already own a domain (that they do not wish to transfer to us.) We can provide an option to hide the notice for those who wish to ignore the offer. Ignoring the offer would not remove their domain credit, only dismiss the dashboard banner.
Common source of confusion among new users, example: #8467950-hc #4217308-zen #4218250-zen
How
One suggestion is to add an Ignore button like so:
