For a long time, the WordPress.com Footer Credit did not appear on sites using an FSE theme. That bug has now been fixed, so the WordPress.com Footer Credit has started appearing on some sites where it wasn't appearing before.
In a recent interaction (40709145-hc), a customer asked why the Footer Credit is suddenly appearing on their site. I explained how to remove it by upgrading to a Business plan, but they felt that it should be removable on the Premium plan and asked that I pass along that feedback.
Why
I feel that the customer has good reasoning here.
For several months since the launch of FSE, the Footer Credit did not appear on FSE sites, and it has only suddenly appeared again.
In our pricing page, we say that any paid plan allows you to remove ads. In the strictest sense, the Footer Credit is an ad, and it makes the site look less professional.
There are already very good reasons for customers to upgrade to a Business plan (allowing plugins and custom themes). Moving the Footer Credit to Premium will allow greater opportunities to upsell from Personal to Premium.
The simplicity of removing the Footer Credit justifies the lower pricing of the Premium plan.
Allowing more customers to remove the Footer Credit may benefit customer retention by improving their satisfaction with our product.
