Popup volume bar not showing while scrolling up/down over the sound icon in MATE and Xfce #91

The popup volume bar that used to show in MATE while using the mousewheel over the sound icon (menu title of ayatana-indicator-sound) is not showing any more. It seems to be gone since at least Ubuntu MATE 20.10, as mentioned in this related issue: https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-indicator-applet/issues/36#issuecomment-581102633.

An archived version of the ayatana indicators wiki mentions this as "a notification bubble showing the volume change": https://web.archive.org/web/20210616202609/https://wiki.ayatana-indicators.org/AyatanaIndicatorSound#Title

This report is based on the following versions in MATE 1.26.0:

ayatana-indicator-common 0.9.7-1 ayatana-indicator-sound 22.2.0-2 mate-panel 1.26.2-1 mate-indicator-applet 1.26.0-1

Scrolling up or down while hovering over the sound icon (red circle in the first pic below) does increase/decrease the sound output volume, but no volume notification is displayed (as in the second pic below).

@sunweaver

Still happening. The volume is increased or decreased on mouse scrolling while hovering over the sound icon without any visual indication, except for the 'mute' icon that appears when volume reaches 0%.

EDIT: in fact there are also three different icons that cover roughly one third of the 0%-100% interval each, but in a dark background they look almost identical. This cannot replace a popup volume bar like the one shown there: https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/124037426/216091319-4a61dd63-d724-44fa-ac1f-a3f259c8e7d9.png.

Any extra info or debugging output required? Or should this issue be reported elsewhere?
