What if Rifts had a life-draining effect on the surrounding land. #362

So currently, aside from spewing sources of taint and breaking blocks when it spawns, the rifts themselves doesn't really seem to have much of an presence in the world. I was briefly thinking of this matter when i remembered that in a previous version of TC, blocks corrupted by taint turned into dust after the taint was purified. And then these two thought interlinked.

I can't imagine a rift in space to be healthy for the land in the least. So what if the rift slowly sucked the life out of the surrounding land, turning it grey and vitrified as the energies around it is gradually sucked in along with the taint. The blocks around it slowly turning to dust as its presence lingers, potentially even impeding the taint if it remains for far too long, beyond what is natural.

Currently the blocks that are in the way of a rift when it opens are simply destroyed, but image if the blocks were turned into dust and then sucked into the rift. And right now the rifts don't really have much of a purpose aside from getting rid of taint, but i'm certain it's going to get more applications as the later stages are integrated that will incentivize keeping the rifts open for longer, adding a greater threat that ushers in more cautionary use.

Obviously this process of expansion would be much slower than the taint, the area of influence expanding as the days pass over the taints comparatively fast spread. You might not even notice it aside from the initial blocks around the rift that are converted when the rift first opens, being a lingering threat in the background in comparison to the taint's imposing presence.

Remember the errie biome from tc4 (the biome created by those non-tainted bad nodes)? What if the rifts themselves created that biome?

TheLordEternal commented 6 years ago

@enderger Seeing as there are no longer any sinister nodes to spread eerie biomes anymore that could be a viable replacement. Perhaps zombies who gets too close to the rift (Or stay too long in the eerie biome) would become furious zombies as well?

Although i had something more... Desolate in mind. The land around the rift being turned to dust, like decaying taint in TC5, after a extended period of time. But only starting to decay once the rift closes, like it was all that sustained the vitrified remains.
