[Feature Request] Private endpoints and network Acls - to be discussed #2510

Open elanzel opened 2 years ago

elanzel commented 2 years ago

When implementing private endpoints a network Acls with the parameter "defultAction" set to "Deny" needs to be put in place at the same time:

"privateEndpoints": {
    "value": [
        {
            "subnetResourceId": "/subscriptions/<>/resourceGroups/validation-rg/providers/Microsoft.Network/virtualNetworks/adp-sxx-az-vnet-x-001/subnets/sxx-az-subnet-x-005-privateEndpoints",
            "service": "vault"
        }
    ]
},
"networkAcls": {
    "value": {
        "bypass": "AzureServices",
        "defaultAction": "Deny",
        "virtualNetworkRules": [],
        "ipRules": []
    }
}

Should this "dependency" be forced by the code? Or should we show this in the parameters file and in the readme? Or are there other alternatives?

Update 22/07/22

When the publicNetworkAccess property is available, that is the setting to disable if private endpoints are set and not networkAcls. Reason for this is for some resources (e.g. EventHub) disabling publicNetworkAccess+ setting networkAcl defaultActionto Denywith empty ipRulesand virtualNetworkRules, causes the resource to be inaccessible from data-plane requests. See e.g. example below

  1. team decides to provide this setting by code, unless a networkAcl is provided
  2. this potentially is true for other modules (probably storage account)
rahalan commented 2 years ago

=> if it applies to more than KeyVault, please create separate issues and link to this one

@elanzel could it be that this issue is already implemented? We definitely implemented the NetworkAcls + modified the public network access based on whether Private Endpoints are provided or not.

AlexanderSehr commented 4 months ago

Hey @eriqua & @elanzel, any take on this? I still agree with my past self πŸ˜„

eriqua commented 3 months ago

@AlexanderSehr I'm not sure if we ever aligned the implementation across all modules. It would be great to double check and revisit based on latest bicep operators introduced.

AlexanderSehr commented 3 months ago

I think we did πŸ˜„ or at least all the implementations looked suspiciously simiar πŸ˜‰
