GitHub's macos-12 runner is now deprecated and will be unsupported by 3 Dec 2024. There will be brownout periods regularly in November, to raise awareness. For details, see https://github.com/actions/runner-images/issues/10721. We should remove macos-12 as a target from the CI in our repos.
I also notice that macos-15 (on M1 CPU) is now available in beta, so we might also consider adding that target.
