changing the date to a large year, while not plausible is something that technically could happen. Even according you the current implementation where it is possible to extend the date to past year 10000.

Thank you for your response. However, we did not think that there would be, in a real world setting, any instance where the return date would ever hit five numbers, except for a bug, which is why we gave an exception and reformatted the return date if it was too large.
