HD Movies Intro #150

Hello there. Any plans to improve better quality for intro videos with this mod? Example: https://drive.google.com/file/d/15SBCl4xjSFncCaSb7R5ZRWFHIIYzrR_1/view?usp=sharing (they are also playable in game).

My idea was simple - try to find a better quality for intro movies. The sources was an original DVD bonus disc. I cut and upscaled videos to 4x with the machine learning algorithm (real-cugan ncnn), but for final result (wmv v8) it was downscaled twice. Unfortunately, higher resolution video is freezing in game, so, I stoped on 1440x960 resolution. Audio was manually converted too from 5.1 to 2.0.

I am sure, that my result is not optimlal, I did not try different algo with different presets, 'cause there are slow. I don't completely understand which resolution and ratio should be better. Etc.

Hi, thank you for the suggestion and sharing your upscaling samples. However, the mod already includes HD upscaled movie intros. The results may not look the greatest because I'm pretty sure the WMV rendering settings we used weren't optimal. Additionally, our fl_intro.wmv has been heavily compressed due to GitHub's 100 MB file size limit.

If your upscaling results are better though, I'd be more than happy to add them to the mod.

Also, is there a particular reason why you used a model that has been primarily trained to upscale anime?

I've re-encoded the upscaled movie intros that we already had, so they should look a bit better now: https://github.com/BC46/freelancer-hd-edition/commit/8ecec2e09d4d29814a60c2cfbbf63599c24978b8.

I just found out that the FL Bonus DVD has higher quality versions of the movie intros. The resolution is the same but the videos have way fewer compression artefacts. Using these as source videos should lead to better upscaling results. However, I noticed that some parts of the FL intro have different sound effects. Hence the audio from the officially released FL intro may have to be used instead.
