You can close this. The way the picture was painted, it looked like stairs on my monitor that were covered in a shadow. All that happened was that I forgot where the stairs leading down are located, and I kept clicking the side of the staircase that leads up. Sorry about that, I thought I encountered a bug.
What happened
When I click on the picture of the stairs that lead down, the game is behaving as though I am clicking the stairs that lead up. So every time I click the stairs to go back down, the character just keeps going up.
What you expected to happen
I expect to go down the stairs so I can leave the monastery.
