Factors driving the content of the PDF user guide #16

What user guide content might compel someone to become a location leader and 1) download Moves and 2) persuade their location peers to do the same. Four key content areas are:

  1. convince them that their efforts will lead to a a new approach to carpooling in which they will be in the driver's seat and be able to...
    • save money
    • save time
    • save the environment
  2. tell them what they have to do:
    • download the app
    • allow the app to access their location, even when they are not using it
    • create an account on the app (this will allow them to export their data to their laptop)
  3. address their concerns:
    • assure their anonymity
    • assure their privacy
  4. offer them some tangible benefits in exchange for their help
    • let them know how many carpools they might have participated in during the period
    • visualize their mobility for them (optional, and only if they request it)
    • give them raffle tickets to win valuable prizes

@zcyang123 @sherlockjjj Will you both be able to jointly present and discuss a second improved draft of the PDF guide to our group this Friday? I suggested four types of content above. Please let me know, thanks.

@vhutheesing So you mean we need to mention "location leader" this position? Or this is generally used for people who participate and are not location leaders?

@zcyang123 No we don't need to mention location leader as you are right that the user guide is for everyone who participates. However the first people we need to convince will be location leaders.

@zcyang123 but to add, i do think that we need to convince drivers, not just riders, as our whole approach to gaining users will be to convince future drivers on our app to adopt this service

User Guide Draft.pdf @vhutheesing Hi Vivek, here is the draft of the pdf user guide. It would be better if you can give me some feedback before our meeting so that I can revise it. Also, I think I need more pictures for the instruction of exporting data. Thanks!

Why Carpooling? Driving is costly. Every vehicle owner spends $1.00 per mile over the life of their car. In addition, they incur the costs of lost time and reduced air-quality. The average car is used only 25% of the time, and even then most of its seats remain empty. We can do much better. What if driving were inexpensive, sustainable, and fun?

The Carpool Project As a group of entrepreneurs, data scientists, students and faculty, we're determined to make carpooling as common as driving. To make this a reality, we need to prove that our hypothesis - that our common locations both result from and lead to common trips.

You Can Help We know you care about saving money, saving time and saving our planet, so please join our project so we can make carpooling a reality. We've devised a way for you to collect your movements privately and upload them anonymously. We've also devised a way to re-structure your uploaded data so that our analysis can ONLY make comparisons between isolated trips that you and another anonymous uploader made around the same time (i.e. trips that could have been carpools).

What We Ask Of You • Download the Moves App to your phone • Let it access your location and run in the background • Export your data from your phone to your computer • Upload your data anonymously to our project website

How We'll Re-Pay You • Our project is applying on-campus for award money • This will enable us to offer you cash and prizes for participating • As a project participant, you'll have full access to our analysis of your data • Upon conclusion, we'll share our project's results and future plans with you

version1.pdf Version 2.pdf Hi @vhutheesing @sherlockjjj, I update the user guide as well as the hyperlinks, please check it out :) I downloaded your data and I got a folder with different format of data in .zip. What we want the users to send us? the whole original folder or the csv.zip or other options so that we can read data more conveniently ? @Minsu-Daniel-Kim

@zcyang123 @sherlockjjj @Minsu-Daniel-Kim I'll take a look at the latest Andrea, thanks. I will also email you an attachment of my moves data (as of a few weeks ago when I had 51 days of collected data) so that you know how it should look to a user (on their own device) once they have exported it. Today in our meeting, I will show everyone another version of this same file - basically, how it should look once they have uploaded it to AWS. It will be a much smaller file with much less data. BTW, I looked at your latest PDF last night on my phone and loved how the hyperlinks worked. With one touch, I was able to get to the Moves App in the App Store and so would only have to tap the screen once more to download the app. That's the kind of ease of use we're looking for so well done! See you this afternoon.
