Automatic CPU Detection: Use all cores #1361

I have been testing this on android for about a year. This should detect and use all cores as a default setting.

I just switched from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Boinc runs fine on my newer machines, but on an older machine Boinc no longer recognizes all cores. Perhaps this is the same problem you are having. Do you know how to get Boinc to recognize all cores?

Different issue. But for Win 10 problems, please post the startup event log.

After starting BOINC, go to the event log. Copy its contents, and paste them into a message here.

There was no event log. Please start up BOINC and post the initial event log (that's where CPUs are reported).

Don't add the log as an attachment. These will be stripped from the email list. Paste the log in a post.

What kind of Xeons are these? How many cores per CPU?

Windows 10 supports a maximum of two physical CPUs, but the number of logical processors or cores varies based on the processor architecture. A maximum of 32 cores is supported in 32-bit versions of Windows 8, whereas up to 256 cores are supported in the 64-bit versions. I suppose these numbers are in use for Windows 10 as well.

According to the Log the processor is this one: Xeon E5405 according to Intel this CPU does not do hyperthreading so BOINC should recognize the 4 physical cores.

What I also see in the log is that the OS seems to be 32 bit on a 64bit CPU. (OS: Microsoft Windows 10: x86 Edition,(10.00.10240.00))

There are 4 physical cores per CPU. Boinc under Windows 7 recognized all of these and ran 8 threads simultaneously. Boinc under Windows 10 runs only two threads. This problem is unique to this older machine. My newer machines are doing just fine (8 threads each).

Can you be a bit more specific about the setup. Do you have 2 CPUs in the problematic host? How many tasks are usually running? Do the newer machines have more RAM? BOINC will only start as much tasks as is RAM available. Since you only have 3,5 GB in the problem host it's possible that the 3 tasks started are reserving all of it so that no other tasks can be started.

The problematic machine has 2 CPUs with 4 cores each. Under Windows 7, I did run out of RAM when Boinc ran 8 projects at once, so I tended to limit the CPU use to 4 or 5 cores. Under Windows 10, only two threads run. In this configuration, the computer only uses 2.1 GB of memory, so I don't believe the RAM is the problem. The system just doesn't seem to recognize the extra cores in my 2 CPUs.

AFAIK does BOINC rely on the operating system to report the number of CPUs (see: client/hostinfo_win.cpp#L1271). Can cou please check in the Task Manager that all 8 cores are shown? The only other thing I can think of is a restriction in Windows 10 to only use 1 physical CPU (7 and 8 had this for the Home version) or that the CPU is incompatible with Windows 10 and thus reports the wrong CPU count.

According to the Intel specs, it has two cores and no hyperthreading.

So either the detection algorithm or Windows 10 appears to have a bug.

But the really outstanding news here is the asking price for OEM versions

of this family at http://starmicroinc.net (found thru Pricewatch).

Starmicronic is asking $10.50 for the E5405 (Intel MRP $231) and $40.00

for the E5450 (Intel MRP $969). Specs for the E5450 are:

Windows 10 supports a maximum of two physical CPUs, but the number of

logical processors or cores varies based on the processor architecture.

A

maximum of 32 cores is supported in 32-bit versions of Windows 8,

whereas

up to 256 cores are supported in the 64-bit versions. I suppose these

numbers are in use for Windows 10 as well.

I don't know what the OP wanted. It seems this was hijacked for a different problem that vanished. If there is still a problem with CPU detection on Windows please open a new issue.
