Crocosmia 'Lucifer' seems to be widespread as an escape in my part of Yorkshire including some quite remote locations, and in some cases perhaps self-seeding (known to breed relatively true to type if self-pollinated). I can't identify a hybrid combination for this in Mapmate list. My understanding is the history of this plant is well known, being a result of focused breeding by Alan Bloom in 1660's by crossing masoniorum x paniculatum. So unless anyone knows different this would seem to the correct combination. This is supported by similar origin identified in the RHS monograph (except one erroneous? statement on p42 suggesting paniculata x C. x crocsmiiflora. This is not repeated elsewhere in the monograph. If any doubt over this then cultivar name would be useful to allow records to be captured.
