I am curious as to why the strong position.
Although Unpaid Internships are a little exploitative, I can imagine scenarios where it is advantageous to do an unpaid internship (especially if there is no alternative).
I think there are limited scenarios where unpaid internships are worth it. One example would be a family member (or family friend) offering mentorship directly at their company.
However, most unpaid internships are, like you said, very exploitative. They provide little to no mentorship and expect the student to do free CRUD work. At NYU, even for freshmen, there are plenty of opportunities that can give you learning while guaranteeing some form of mentorship (VIP/Research). Even over the summer, MLH or GSOC (or just plain research) are significantly more valuable in terms of learning and probably similar for the resume boost.
