switched role access to using kvdbms

Did my best based on what I saw in kvdbms.py, do look over and adjust if I messed anything up but I think I got it.

I did a rebase/merge/push separately from this, and github apparently isn't recognizing that as a merge, so I'm just closing this with a comment, the changes are in though
