Hi mate,
The available list is calculated based upon the size of the paladin. Warpony and riding dog are only available if the Paladin is size small or smaller.

Thanks for the info, now to figure out why we've always thought dwarves rode ponies

Likely Tolkien influence. Dwarf in D&D is Medium-sized; Pony is Medium-sized. Per mount rules, the mount must be at least one size larger than the creature to operate as a mount.
Tolkien has a lot to answer for :-)

at 5th level, a paladin should get a Warpony and riding dog, but only gets warhorse and large shark
