Here in this issue we inform Translators and Proofreaders when we update the strings in Crowdin. This is also a good place to discuss about source strings and implementation details.

Inclusion Process

The inclusion of a new Language into GPS Logger will be done in two phases: 1) Translation - The translation of 100% of the application strings. Anyone can contribute to translate, without any obligation.

2) Proofreader Research - A proofreader is a reference person that will work (using Crowdin platform) with the developing team in order to optimize and keep the translation updated. We ask proofreaders a modest follow-up effort (few minutes when we update strings file, maximum once every 2-3 months), and a constructive collaboration spirit.

Translations will be integrated into GPS Logger - just before a new release - when they will be 100% completed and handled by one or more proofreaders. No longer maintained and incomplete localizations will be removed from the app.

The implementation of an unlisted language is welcome! Just ask, and we will add it.

There is no money behind this open project, only passion, and desire to do something useful. We have absolutely NO interest to have as many languages as possible. We hope instead of cooperation with people (maybe GPS Logger users) that share our interests and contribute translating and keep updated this software with our same passion. This is the reason why we will not cooperate with any paid translator or proofreader.

@JLJu - I think it is possible to add the Spanish Language as early as the next release.

@erezcohenbox - The implementation of the Hebrew Language is a bit more complex, because this is the first RTL Language we are implementing into the app. RTL languages bring some related layout issues. I'll publish here some screenshots of the hebrew RTL app draft, in order to start speaking and adjust the layout issues prior to implementation.

In the past 2 months many users asked to add unlisted localizations and made great jobs submitting complete and well done translations.

We are now trying to do another step forward on the Translation management, in order to keep updated the translations already implemented and to offer good translations of this free and opensource app in as many languages as possible.

We uploaded the updated Strings on Crowdin. In the next update we'll add some strings, in order to add: 1) The ability to choose between KML and GPX viewer (GPX exportation is more complete; choosing GPX format the users can view more data); 2) A toast that inform the user when the Exportation is completed; 3) A shortcut to the Android Location Setting Screen (and a hint: how to enable the GPS sensor);

The About screen description has been modified in order to remove "Google Earth" in favour of a more generic "your preferred viewer".

Here below a brief summary of the string changes: 1) The new release brings a renewed Tracklist with the support for multiple track selection; some strings change to plural form 2) Added some strings for translate in the correct way the composite directions (NNW, NW and so on...) 3) Some strings are modified in order to remove when possible the word "Google"

Next days we'll release a bugfix update (v2.2.1). We don't add any feature (and neither new localizations), but we'll update the localizations already included in the v2.2.0 in order to correct eventual mistakes

Big improvements are made in Hungarian and Brazilian Portuguese localizations: the next app updates could soon support these new languages!

In the next update we are working in order to implementing some of the most requested features:

• High Frequency recording (specially useful for users that use external Bluetooth GPS Receivers);
• Ability to shutdown the App without finalize the current Track;
• Detection of System Kills during background Recording, with the possibility to resume the track;

We uploaded some Strings related to these features.

We changed the term "Finish" with "Finalize" (because the previous term could be confusing on the shutdown message), thus a couple of strings are disapproved: please check them too.

Since we don't have the portuguese (Portugal) Localization yet, Android 7.0+ will use the brazilian one for all portuguese Languages. We hope to have soon the Portuguese (Portugal) localization too.

If anyone is interested to translate the app in portuguese, please ask: if needed, We can copy all the brazilian strings into portuguese Localization (in Crowdin), to be used as a start point.

We uploaded the updated Strings on Crowdin for the incoming release v2.2.5.

• In the new release, when there is enough space on screen, the GPS Fix tab will show the GPS Time (it is the GMT time, not the local one) and the number of Satellites (Used/Total).
• The new release adds a Light Color Theme, essential in some bright environments: 3 new strings are added in order to implement the preference.

We are almost ready to release the next App's Update v2.2.5. These days are good for translators and proofreaders to finish updating and reviewing the translations before the implementation.

@VegaDark you have now proofreader rights for Spanish Language. Feel free to approve / disapprove the translations if you need to adjust or change something.

Proofreaders have no obligations, but they can approve / disapprove strings, helping us to keep updated the translations along the updates. The effort is really modest (we add / modify a small number of strings every approx. 3 months). You can any time ask to add or remove you as a Proofreader.

We uploaded the updated Strings on Crowdin for the incoming release v2.2.7.

The new release will improve the external Track Viewer Management by adding a Selector when 2 or more GPX/KML Viewers are installed. No more digging into Default System Apps for Users. Furthermore, the Settings now have a Preference in order to select a Viewer by Default. With this preference the User can also choose to Select the Viewer anytime the "View" button has been pressed.

You can follow the implementation of the External Viewer Selector in the issue #87.

We added the portuguese Language (commit a64ae6d) We don't have yet a proofreader, but we choose to include it anyway because:

• the translation is complete and seems good
• it is kept well translated by some users in the last months
• we are already including the Brazilian Portuguese (quite similar), that is very well done and actively maintained.

At the request of many users, We decided to add the possibility to show the GPS time in Local Timezone Notation instead of the absolute GPS Time (GPST). We added a SwitchPreference on Settings, containing 2 Strings:

This way the App doesn't create confusion about Time anymore, specifying the Local Time and the Offset from the UTC. Furthermore the Local Time is very useful, for example, if you want to sync the Time of a DSLR Camera with the GPS Time.

The Local Timezone Notation will be active by Default.

The new feature will be included into the next App's Update.

Android API 29 are mandatory starting from this November. Google introduces some News for Foreground Service Management, and we decided to implement some additional Warnings and Checks (4 new Strings) in order to help the Users to find some common configuration Problems and set the System in the right Way.

The next Update will allow to use the App with the Location Permission "When the App is in Use" in Android 10+, and will fix some GPX compatibility Problems with Memory-Map and Geosetter.

After some months of work we are almost ready to release GPS Logger v3.0.0. We uploaded the updated Strings on Crowdin for the incoming release.

The new version, among others, introduces some of the most requested features:

  A new bottom bar, strongly inspired by audio recorders, including a Lock button that avoids accidental clicks;

• 47
  The ability to add a description to tracks, that is used also to name the files;

• 47
  A small Edit Details dialog, for adding/changing the description of the Track and the activity type;

  A link to the online help;

  Visualization of the number of satellites when the app is looking for GPS;

Some strings have been added in order to implement the new features, some other have been deleted (for example the strings related to the ugly V tick used to finalize the tracks). We removed all the references to "Placemark" in favour of the more friendly term "Annotation", that is more suitable to be referred as action using "Annotate". This way we also aim to remove the confusion between "Trackpoints" and "Placemarks" that occurs on some localizations (like german).

Information for Japanese users:

Currently the Japanese localization is no longer maintained, and it would need a translator (and a proofreader).

We could choose to release the v3.0.0 including the Japanese localization also if not completed, and then remove it if no one translates it by the v3.0.1; as alternative, we could directly remove it on v3.0.0, in order to avoid partially untranslated interfaces. We'll take some time to decide the right approach.

Of course, in case someone would like to complete the Japanese translation, he can do it in the next few days.

I tried the app with the Japanese localization: It's very ugly to see that the bottom bar is completely untranslated, nevertheless we chosen to add it to the app, with the hope that someone will take care of translation by the v3.0.1. If no one will translate it, we'll remove the Japanese from the app on v3.0.X.

@hakuchi first of all thanks for your reporting.

The strings should be approved by german proofreaders. Proofreaders approve the strings that are "perfect enough" and should not be changed by translators voting, but the amount of approved strings are up to each proofreader.

In general we prefer to have fully approved localizations (it is a weak requirement for the inclusion), but the german language is well translated by some users and maintained by one proofreader (and widely used by our users), thus we keep it onboard.

I take this opportunity to remember to the community that anyone can take care of a language by proposing thamselves as Proofreader!

For example, we currently are looking for a volunteer translator / proofreader for JAPANESE localization. As alternative the japanese localization (that is currently half translated) will be removed.

After some months of work we are almost ready to release GPS Logger v3.1.0. We uploaded the updated Strings on Crowdin for the incoming release.

The new version, among others, introduces some requested features:

  The user can choose the local exportation folder. On the old Android 4 systems the folder cannot be changed (it remains the /GPSLogger folder used on the previous version), and the setting is hidden;

• 139
  Implementation of a Distance Filter that accepts a user-entered value (in meters / feet). The filter triggers the recording of a trackpoint when the distance to the previous one is >= to the set value;

• 140
  Implementation of a Interval Filter that accepts a user-entered value (in seconds). The filter triggers the recording of a trackpoint after the set amount of time (in seconds) from the previous one;

Some strings have been added in order to implement the new features, some others have been deleted (for example the strings related to the old Distance Filter with pre-defined spacing values).

We updated the strings on Crowdin.

No big changes, we removed a couple of unused strings and we fixed some small issues on the about description: we updated the copyright dates, we changed the links from http:// to https://, and we removed the reference to /GPSLogger folder because now the folder is selectable. Thanks to @DazzyWalkman and @zedxxx for the useful suggestions.

I awkwardly tried to apply the changes to the about description string of all languages: for the copyright date and the https links I had no problem, but please check the part where I removed the reference to /GPSLogger folder, because I most likely made some ugly mistakes :smiley: :disappointed:.

I removed the approval to the about description; feel free to check, correct and approve it.

We added the greek Language (commit 4a32e48). We don't have yet a proofreader, but we choose to include it anyway because seems very well made, hoping to find a proofreader soon.

The Ukrainian localization is not included yet because it is fully translated but not held by any proofreader. We are waiting a willing (collaborative, and patient) person that is interested to cooperate at this purpose.

If someone would like to deepen the argument, he can read the inclusion policy here at the top of this issue or in the GPS Logger's homepage on Crowdin.

@strump - You already done a great work translating the Russian language (you did most of the work that led to inclusion), thus you know that we are a bit fussy during the unpleasant initial setup of a new language (with the purpose and the hope to start with a good translation). The bulk of the proofreader's work is at this stage; once included, a localization requires a very modest effort to be held.

After some months of work we are approaching the release v3.2.0. We uploaded the updated Strings on Crowdin for the incoming release.

The new version, among others, introduces some features that require some new strings:

  As first implementation we introduced the much requested possibility to copy the coordinates to clipboard, with a click on a new icon placed on the lower right border of the coordinates tile; A new string will inform the user that the coordinates are copied.

  We expanded the activity selector, that now includes approx. 45 activities, in order to cover as many activities as possible. We thought to divide the activities in categories, thus we need a new string to name each of them.
